Showcasing the very best in adult social care nursing

On 12 September Sarah McGloin, RCN Foundation Head of Grants and Impact, attended the Adult Social Care – Proud, Passionate Present event in London.

This was the inaugural celebration event of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Councils (SCNACs) for England, supported by The Outstanding Society and NIHR.

Professor Claire Pryor, the RCN Foundation Chair in Adult Social Care Nursing at University of Salford, took part in a panel discussion where she described Social Care as the sister to the NHS and not the distant cousin. Claire set out her vision for her new role, the first of its kind in the UK, with lots of exciting work to be done – watch this space!

Attendees came from across the health and social care sector, including Social Care Nurses, Geriatricians, GPs, Regional and ICB CNOs, individuals with lived experience, Academics, Paramedics, Pharmacists, Student Nurses, and many more. There was a panel which showcased the diversity of the social care nurse role and the complex care they provide to individuals as well as insightful research being shared. The Vivaldi Social Care study is a piece of research taking place across care homes, exploring infections and outbreaks in care homes. This will provide data that can be used by providers and policymakers to measure and understand health outcome of care home residents across different regions.

Sarah said “It was great to hear from universities about the changes they are making to ensure social care nursing placements are embedded within the pre-registration training – something that is vital. It was wonderful to hear the passion from those nurses working across the sector and the pride they have in their role. A brilliantly uplifting and inspirational day, showcasing the very best in adult social care nursing.”
