A personal reflection on service and impact
Honoured to receive an MBE: A personal reflection on service and impact
I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in His Majesty The King’ s New Years Honours. This recognition feels surreal – it’s not something you ever expect, and it’s certainly not something you achieve alone. It is not just a personal milestone – it also represents the incredible work and dedication of so many people who share a commitment to improving lives through nursing, midwifery and healthcare.
When I received the news, my first thoughts (following the initial shock and realisation that this was not a tax bill!!) were of gratitude – for my family, my mentors and the colleagues who have walked this journey with me. Every step has been driven by a passion for making a difference, and this honour is a reminder of why that matters.
When I reflect on this journey, I think about the countless individuals and communities who inspire me every day. In leading the RCN Foundation, I’ve had the privilege of championing initiatives that empower and develop nursing and midwifery staff, fund innovation and research, and provide hardship grants to those in need.
At the RCN Foundation, our mission has always been clear: to support nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals so they can continue to deliver exceptional care. This honour is a testament to that mission and to the collective effort of the colleagues, partners and supporters who make it possible.
Receiving an MBE is a moment to celebrate, but it is also a reminder of the responsibility we carry. Healthcare is about compassion, resilience, and innovation – and those values will continue to guide everything I do. There is still so much to do to ensure that nursing and midwifery professionals are given the resources, recognition and value that they deserve.
To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. This recognition belongs to all of us who believe in the power of nursing and midwifery and the difference it makes in people’s lives.
If you share this vision, I invite you to support the work of the RCN Foundation. Your contribution – whether through donations, partnerships or advocacy – helps us continue funding education, research and hardship grants that change lives.
Together, we can make an even greater impact.
