The CCL focuses on creating the conditions in which compassionate leadership can flourish, rather than asking individuals to be more resilient in systems that work against them.
We aim to:
- Provide staff with the tools to enable them to deliver care, consistently and sustainably
- Shift the focus from individual deficit to team, cultural and system responsibility
- Support compassionate leadership that is practical, evidence informed and deliverable in real-world settings
- See quantifiable improvements in wellbeing metrics across the teams with which we work, measured against the ABC framework - including but not limited to, improvements in sickness absence rates, retention rates and psychological safety
How we aim do this: our three pillars
All of the Centre’s work is delivered through three interlinked pillars. Each pillar contributes to operationalising the ABC framework (Autonomy, Belonging, Contribution) and the eight recommendations from The Courage of Compassion.

1. Co‑create and co‑deliver compassionate leadership pilot programmes
We work with partners across health and social care to design and test new ways of creating the conditions for compassionate leadership to thrive.
2. Build a Compassionate Leadership Collaborative
The Centre is developing a collaborative community of practice that connects nurses, midwives, educators, researchers and wider multi-professional colleagues who are committed to compassionate leadership - sharing evidence, amplifying learning from practice, and contributing to wider leadership and workforce conversations.
3. Build credibility and authority
The Centre builds trust by naming compassionate leadership as purposeful, courageous and grounded in evidence. Clearly articulating that it is not leadership without challenge.
