'Dear Nurse – Stories of Strength, Kindness and Skill'

A love letter to nurses and midwives in the 75th anniversary year of the NHS

To mark the 75th anniversary year of the NHS, the RCN Foundation and Scholastic UK have partnered up to publish a children’s book of inspiring true stories by nurses and midwives.

Dear Nurse: True Stories of Strength, Kindness and Skill will be published February 2023. For every copy sold, 50p will be donated to the Foundation to support our work.

Written for 8+ readers, Dear Nurse will feature writing from 44 nurses and midwives, sharing true stories about their profession. The beloved broadcaster Jo Whiley has written the foreword.

The relatable and revealing insights shared in the book will captivate young readers and shine a light on the strength, compassion and skills shown by the people who treat, heal and care for us.

Dear Nurse will be beautifully illustrated throughout by the two-time Kate Greenaway Medal winner artist, Michael Foreman OBE, whose evocative and moving illustrations have appeared in previous acclaimed charitable collaborations with Scholastic, Poppy Field by Michael Morpurgo, and Please Write Soon by Michael Rosen.

Deepa Korea, Director of the RCN Foundation, says: "Nursing and midwifery staff play an invaluable role in keeping the public safe and well. We are excited to be able to showcase some of their incredible stories and hope that this book will perhaps encourage young readers to consider a career in these professions.

"We are also delighted to be partnering with Scholastic on this project. The donations raised through the sale of this book will help ensure that we are able to support nursing and midwifery professionals when they need us."

Elizabeth Scoggins, Scholastic's publisher of non-fiction, brands and licensing says: “With Dear Nurse, we want to publish a love letter to all the strong, compassionate and skilful nurses and midwives who work tirelessly to care for us.

"Reading some of their stories in their own words, accompanied by Michael Foreman’s remarkable illustrations, opens a window into their world that will inform, amaze and reassure young readers.”
