The RCN Foundation Welsh Scholarships are two grant programmes which offer financial support of up to £1,600 to nurses registered in the UK and working in Wales.
You do not need to be an RCN member to apply for either scholarship however, your course or module must start between January 2027 and January 2028.
RCN Foundation Alun Islwyn Nursing Scholarship
The RCN Foundation Alun Islwyn Nursing Scholarship was established by the RCN Wales Board in 1989 and offers grants of up to £1,600 to registered nurses currently living and working in Wales who wish to undertake a course or programme that will enhance their continuous professional development, improve nursing practice and enhance person centred care.
To be eligible you must be:
- A nurse currently registered in the UK and practising in Wales

RCN Foundation Hettie C Hopkins Geriatric Nursing Scholarship
The RCN Foundation Hettie C Hopkins Geriatric Nursing Scholarship was established by the RCN Wales Board in 1980 and offers grants of up to £1,600 to registered nurses currently living and working in Wales who wish to undertake a course or programme that will enhance their continuous professional development, improve nursing practice and enhance person centred care.
To be eligible you must be:
- A nurse currently registered in the UK and practising in Wales
- Able to demonstrate working with and supporting older people in your nursing practice in Wales

Other key points to consider
We will not accept applications from student nurses and nurses who are on apprenticeships.
Previous RCN Foundation bursary successful applicants are eligible to apply provided they have fulfilled all the terms of their previous award(s).
