We are delighted to share that March marks the RCN Foundation's 15th anniversary!

Since our creation in 2010, we've supported over 11,000 nurses, midwives and healthcare support workers through our hardship and education grants. We've awarded nearly £4 million in research grants to support nursing and midwifery led projects.

We've seen the transformational impact of the support that we've provided - transformational for nursing and midwifery staff, and transformational to the care that they provide every day to individuals and communities.

Our organisation and staff have grown, we established a subsidiary charity, Covid-19 Healthcare Support Appeal (CHSA), in response to the pandemic and the implications this had on nursing and midwifery professionals on the frontline. We've created some firsts and collaborated with some brilliant organisations along the way. These accomplishments signify the lasting impact we've made to support and strengthen nursing and midwifery and improve the health and wellbeing of the public over the last 15 years, but it doesn't stop there.

Our plans for the future

In 2024 we announced our five-year strategy: Ignite, Inspire, Aspire: Our Vision to Transform Lives. Over the next five years, we will increase our support in the three core areas of our work – hardship, education and learning, and research and innovation - ensuring that the voices of nursing and midwifery, and of those with lived experience, are reflected throughout all our work.

Over the next five years we intend to:

  • Develop a new grant funding programme focused on issues of midwifery and maternal health
  • Fund Quality Improvement projects to transform service delivery and improve healthcare
  • Establish a Centre for Compassionate Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for nursing and midwifery staff, particularly in relation to mental ill health.

Our hardship and signposting support exist to ensure that nurses, midwives and healthcare/maternity support workers are provided with routes out of poverty and hardship. Each donation we receive, no matter the amount, secures the longevity and success of this service.

By 2028, we will have achieved:

     2028 in numbers

15x15 Challenge

In celebration of our 15th anniversary, we’ve launched the 15 for 15 Challenge to raise funds and support the work of the RCN Foundation.

Pick a personal or group challenge that involves the number 15 - for example: a 15-mile run or 15-hour silence and get sponsored as you complete the challenge you have set yourself. All donations, no matter the amount, make a real difference.
